Methodology

How the calculation works

Two validated, published formulas — shown side by side so you understand exactly what's behind your number.

U.S. Navy Circumference Method

Developed by Hodgdon & Beckett (1984) at the Naval Health Research Center. It estimates body fat from your height and the circumference of your neck, waist, and (for women) hips — no calipers or scans needed. It's the most widely validated tape-measure method and is what powers your main result above.

BMI-Based Estimate (Deurenberg formula)

Uses your BMI, age, and sex to estimate body fat percentage. It's faster (just height and weight) but less accurate for very muscular or very lean people, since BMI can't distinguish muscle from fat. We show it alongside the Navy result for comparison.

Why two methods?

No at-home method is perfectly accurate. Showing both lets you see how closely they agree — large gaps often mean your body composition differs from 'average' (e.g. very muscular), which is useful information on its own.

Before you start

How to measure correctly

Accuracy depends on measurement technique. Use a flexible (cloth/vinyl) tape measure, snug but not compressing the skin, measured twice for consistency.

Neck

Wrap the tape just below the larynx (Adam's apple), sloping slightly downward toward the front.

Waist

Men: at the navel. Women: at the narrowest point of the waist, usually just above the belly button.

Hip (women)

Around the widest part of the hips and buttocks, feet together.

Context

Body fat % vs. BMI — what's the difference?

BMI only compares weight to height. It can't tell muscle from fat, which is why we show a body-fat-specific result as your primary number.

BMI (Body Mass Index)

A quick screening ratio of weight to height. Fast to calculate but blind to body composition — a muscular athlete and a sedentary person can share the same BMI while having very different body fat percentages.

Body Fat Percentage

Estimates what portion of your weight is fat vs. lean tissue (muscle, bone, organs, water). More informative for fitness and health tracking, which is why we lead with it and show BMI as a secondary data point.

Accuracy & limitations

Every at-home method is an estimate. Here's what can affect your result.

  • Measurement technique — inconsistent tape placement or tension is the biggest source of error.
  • Hydration & time of day — measure at a consistent time (e.g. morning) for comparable results.
  • Body type extremes — very lean or very muscular bodies can skew circumference-based formulas.
  • Not diagnostic — for medical decisions, use a clinical method (DEXA, hydrostatic weighing) and consult a professional.

Guide

Free Body Fat Percentage Calculator — Everything You Need to Know

How this tool works, who it's for, and how it compares to calipers, BMI, and the Army's own standards.

A body fat calculator estimates what percentage of your total body weight is fat, as opposed to muscle, bone, organs, and water. Unlike a bathroom scale — which only tells you total weight — a body fat percentage calculator gives you a much clearer picture of body composition, which is what actually changes when you gain muscle or lose fat. This free body fat calculator uses the U.S. Navy circumference method as its primary estimate, with a BMI-based estimate shown alongside it for comparison, plus your Body Mass Index and waist-to-height ratio — all calculated instantly in your browser, for free, with no sign-up.

How to Calculate Body Fat Percentage at Home

You don't need a gym, a scan, or special equipment to estimate body fat at home — just a flexible tape measure and, optionally, a bathroom scale. The most reliable no-equipment approach is the Navy body fat calculator method: measure your height, neck, and waist (plus hips if you're female), enter your sex, and the formula does the rest. This is exactly how the calculator above works — fill in your measurements, choose metric or imperial units, and get your estimated body fat percentage, fat mass, and lean mass in one click. For best results, measure first thing in the morning, use a snug-but-not-tight tape, and take each measurement twice.

Navy Body Fat Calculator: Built for Both Men and Women

The US Navy body fat calculator formula (Hodgdon & Beckett, 1984) uses slightly different inputs for each sex, because fat is distributed differently across the body. A body fat calculator male version needs only height, neck, and waist. A body fat calculator female version adds a hip measurement, because the female formula (which also factors in hip circumference) is substantially more accurate for typical female fat distribution than the male-only formula would be. Whether you need a body fat calculator women can rely on, or a straightforward body fat calculator men can use in under a minute, this tool switches automatically based on the sex you select — no separate pages or tools needed.

Army Body Fat Calculator and the New 2026 Standard

Searches for an army body fat calculator or new army tape test calculator usually relate to the U.S. Army's body composition standards, which have changed recently. Through mid-2026, the Army used a one-site (waist-only) or multi-site tape test — a close cousin of the Navy circumference method used here — to estimate body fat as part of the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). As of July 2026, the Army rescinded body-fat-percentage testing entirely in favor of a singleWaist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) standard: waist circumference divided by height, which must stay under 0.550, with no age or gender adjustment. This calculator isn't the official ABCP tool, but it estimates both figures for you — your Navy-method body fat percentage and your waist-to-height ratio — so if you're tracking against either the older body fat percentage army standard or the current new army height and weight calculator 2026 policy, you have a useful reference point either way.

Body Fat Calculator vs. Caliper Method

A body fat caliper calculator uses skinfold calipers to pinch and measure fat thickness at several points on the body (commonly the Jackson-Pollock 3-site or 7-site protocols), then plugs those numbers into a formula. Done correctly by a trained technician, caliper methods can be very accurate — but self-measuring skinfolds consistently is genuinely difficult, and small technique errors compound across multiple sites. A tape-measure based body fat calculator like this one trades a small amount of theoretical accuracy for something more important for most people: measurements you can actually take consistently, on your own, every time.

How Accurate Is This Body Fat Calculator?

No at-home or free online tool can match a clinical DEXA scan, hydrostatic weighing, or Bod Pod test — those remain the gold standard and are typically accurate to within 1–2% body fat. The Navy circumference method used by this American body composition calculator is generally accurate to within about 3–4% body fat versus DEXA when measurements are taken carefully, which is why it's widely considered one of the most accurate body fat calculator options available for free, without special equipment. We show a second, BMI-based estimate alongside it so you can see how the two compare — a large gap between them usually just means your body composition (e.g. more or less muscle than average) differs from what BMI alone assumes. Whichever number you're after, remember this is a screening estimate for tracking trends over time, not a medical diagnosis.

Why Use This Body Fat Calculator?

There are dozens of body fat calculators online, but most bury the tool under ads, force a sign-up to save results, or show a single unexplained number with no context. This one is built the other way around: the calculator loads instantly, every input is explained (tap the info icon next to neck, waist, or hip for exactly where to measure), and your result comes with fat mass, lean mass, BMI, waist-to-height ratio, and a category — not just a percentage in isolation. It works equally well as a body fat calculator for a first-time user checking their starting point and as a free body fat calculator for someone tracking body recomposition month over month. Your measurements are processed entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded or stored — so you can check your body fat percentage as often as you like, privately, on any device, in whichever units you're used to working with.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a body fat calculator?

A body fat calculator is a tool that estimates what percentage of your body weight is fat, versus lean tissue like muscle, bone, organs, and water. Unlike a bathroom scale, which only shows total weight, it uses measurements such as height, weight, neck, and waist circumference to estimate actual body composition.

How accurate is an online body fat calculator?

The U.S. Navy circumference method used by this calculator is typically accurate to within about 3–4% body fat compared to clinical methods like DEXA scans, when measurements are taken correctly. It's reliable for tracking trends over time, but it's a screening estimate, not a diagnostic measurement.

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

Roughly 14–24% for men and 21–31% for women falls in the fitness-to-average range, per ACE body fat categories. Athletes often sit lower, around 6–20%. Essential fat minimums are about 2–5% for men and 10–13% for women — dropping below that is unhealthy, not aspirational.

How is body fat percentage calculated without calipers?

The U.S. Navy method calculates body fat percentage using only a flexible tape measure: your height plus neck and waist circumference (and hip circumference for women). No skinfold calipers, scans, or special equipment are needed — this calculator uses exactly that method.

Can I calculate body fat percentage from BMI?

Yes — the Deurenberg formula estimates body fat percentage from your BMI, age, and sex. It only needs height and weight, so it's faster than the Navy method, but it's less accurate for very muscular or very lean people since BMI can't distinguish muscle from fat.

What's the difference between body fat percentage and BMI?

BMI is simply a ratio of weight to height — it can't tell fat from muscle. Body fat percentage measures actual body composition, the portion of your weight that's fat versus lean mass, which makes it a more meaningful fitness and health indicator than BMI alone.

Is a body fat calculator accurate for athletes or muscular people?

Circumference-based methods like the Navy formula are generally more reliable for muscular people than BMI-based estimates, but they can still slightly overestimate body fat in very lean, muscular individuals since a larger waist doesn't always mean more fat. For elite-level accuracy, a DEXA scan is the better option.

What measurements do I need for a body fat calculator?

For the Navy method used here, you need your age, sex, height, weight, neck circumference, and waist circumference — plus hip circumference if you're female. All of these can be measured at home with a flexible cloth or vinyl tape measure.

How often should I check my body fat percentage?

Every 2–4 weeks is plenty. Body fat percentage changes slowly, and measuring at the same time of day, under the same conditions each time, keeps your results comparable and reduces day-to-day noise like hydration or bloating.

Is a free online body fat calculator as accurate as a gym scale?

Bioelectrical impedance (gym or bathroom) scales and circumference-based calculators both carry similar error margins — roughly 3–5% versus a DEXA scan. Impedance scales are also sensitive to hydration at the moment of testing. Neither is universally more accurate; consistency in how and when you measure matters more than which method you use.

What is the U.S. Navy body fat formula?

Developed by Hodgdon and Beckett in 1984 at the Naval Health Research Center, it's a logarithmic formula that estimates body fat percentage from your height and circumference measurements — neck and waist for men, plus hip for women. It remains one of the most widely validated tape-measure methods available for free.

Can I use a body fat calculator to track weight loss progress?

Yes — tracking body fat percentage alongside fat mass and lean mass over time shows whether you're losing fat or losing muscle, something the scale alone can't tell you. Re-measure every 2–4 weeks under consistent conditions for the clearest trend.

Does age or gender affect body fat percentage calculations?

Yes. Men and women distribute fat differently, so the Navy method uses separate formulas — the women's version adds a hip measurement for accuracy. Age doesn't factor into the Navy formula itself, but it directly affects the BMI-based estimate and shifts what's considered a healthy range, since body fat tends to rise with age even at a stable weight.
